SUMMARY:Firearm Deaths in Montana
DESCRIPTION:This session is designed for trauma professionals and will examine firearm-related deaths in Montana through a trauma system and injury prevention lens. Dr. McKenzie will review epidemiologic trends\, common injury patterns\, and contributing factors unique to a rural\, frontier setting—including access to care\, transport times\, and resource variability. The presentation will connect these factors to real-world challenges faced by trauma teams\, highlight opportunities for system-level improvement\, and discuss evidence-informed prevention strategies that trauma programs can incorporate to reduce morbidity and mortality.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nDescribe the geographic challenges of trauma care in MontanaDescribe the firearm related death issue in Montana.Demonstrate understanding of the driver of the high firearm mortality rate in Montana.List the barriers to reducing Montana’s firearm related deaths.Describe characteristics of Montana contributing to the firearm death rate.State efforts in Montana being made to reduce firearm related deaths.\n

SUMMARY:Ski Fast\, Bleed Faster: The Challenge of Splenic Trauma
DESCRIPTION:We will explore real-world ski hill splenic injury cases to examine the unique challenges faced by first-responders\, EMS and critical care transport providers caring for patients with blunt abdominal trauma in remote mountain environments. Participants will review the epidemiology and mechanisms of splenic injury associated with skiing and snowboarding\, recognize key clinical findings that suggest significant splenic trauma\, and discuss the limitations of field assessment in cold-weather and austere settings. Through case-based discussions\, attendees will evaluate evidence-based prehospital management strategies\, including hemorrhage recognition\, resuscitation priorities\, pain management\, monitoring\, and activation of trauma resources. The presentation will also explore transport decision-making\, emphasizing destination selection\, air medical utilization\, and considerations for prolonged evacuation times. By analyzing successes\, challenges\, and lessons learned from actual cases\, participants will strengthen their ability to identify high-risk patients\, anticipate deterioration\, and optimize outcomes for injured winter sports athletes.\n\nLearning Objectives:\nIdentify mechanisms of injury\, patterns associated with splenic trauma in ski and snowboard accidents.Recognize clinical signs of splenic injury\, compensated v. decompensated shock.Apply current\, evidence-based strategies\, for suspected splenic injury.\n
